Tour 1
Day Tour to Sea Cucumber Processing Plant
North Stradbroke Island

Friday 11 August 2006

Take the opportunity to learn about one of Australia's more obscure agricultural exports, and discover the natural beauty of Queensland's second largest sand island, with a daytrip to the beche-de-mer or, sea cucumber, processing plant on North Stradbroke Island.

In a Queensland first, a group of Australian aboriginal people, the Nunukul Ngugi Cultural Heritage Corporation, has been granted permission to harvest and process sea cucumbers for export to Asia where it is regarded as a delicacy and medicinal tonic. The corporation currently employs 17 staff, 12 of who are members of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Learn how the sea cucumbers are harvested, processed, and sent to export markets through this unique facility.

This tour involves travelling across beautiful Moreton Bay to North Stradbroke Island, once site to some of the world's largest sand-mining operations to recover rutile, zircon, and titanium. Enjoy a gourmet lunch at the renowned local restaurant, Amis, while appreciating the magnificent ocean views. See if you can spot dolphins frolicking in the surf, and if you are lucky, watch whales breaching in the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean.

Tour 2
Extended Agricultural and Pastoral Tour
Southwest Queensland and Northwestern New South Wales

Tuesday 8 August – Friday 11 August 2006

This tour will give delegates the opportunity to explore the outback and visit unique Australian agricultural enterprises in southern inland Queensland and north western New South Wales. You will learn about the development and innovation necessary to survive in this harsh Australian environment where rainfall varies enormously from year to year.

Tour the largest pecan farm in the Southern Hemisphere, learn about Australian organic beef production, visit one of the oldest feedlots in the Australian beef cattle industry, and travel to places with names adapted from the local aboriginal language such as Goondiwindi and Dirranbandi to meet and talk to large-scale cotton growers, including a visit to Cubbie station – Australia's largest privatelyowned irrigation development and cotton property.

Investigate the implications for water resources management of impounding more fresh water on a single property than is contained in Sydney Harbour.

Hear about the innovations in sorghum breeding and solutions to dryland salinity that are evolving because of the shared research interests of scientists and farmers.
